Surviving a week on battery after substation fire

Experience report, take it with a grain of salt.

Substation fire last tuesday, 14:30. Our DR plan assumed 10 minutes of battery. UPS is sized for full load, we run at 3% of design capacity. Batteries lasted 167 hours. Seven days.

IMO this is not a success story. YMMV. We never tested actual draw. The "heroic survival" was blind luck. If someone had plugged in a GPU cluster monday, we would have dark floor in ten minutes.

I am logging this so someone else learns. Test your actual load. Not nameplate. Actual.

Quinnbizz this is INSANE value for lead acid!

Those batteries were basically idling! At 3% draw the chemistry just... coasts! You found the cheat code!

Ampere boxes sip power. Runs circles around x86 for this exact scenario. I have a Altra Max at home pulling 45W under full tilt. You could run a week on a car battery.

What UPS model? Need specs!

one small ping for man...

3% load for a week isn't luck, it's physics
