Survived a host's 'strategic pivot'

Hi everyone sorry total noob here 😅 I wanted to share my experience with Contabo since I saw some threads about them. So they sent everyone an email saying they're dropping all VPS customers for "strategic pivot to enterprise focus." Gave us 30 days to migrate. The data export failed twice and I had to open tickets both times. But honestly? They were upfront about it the whole time. No hidden fees, no sudden shutdown. I know it sounds weird but I'd still recommend them for transparency if you're an enterprise customer I guess? Sorry if this is dumb.

Actually (and I say this as someone who ran a Contabo instance back in my day (2019, specifically their KVM beta (version 2.1.3 of their control panel, which was actually a fork of SolusVM))) the transparency is worth something. Most hosts just... vanish. (or worse, get "acquired" (which we all know means the IP blocks get shuffled to some shell company in a jurisdiction you've never heard of)). Still, two failed exports? That's rough. What format did they give you, raw qcow2 or something exotic?

Guys, real question: did they honor any prorated refunds or were you eating the cost? I got some clients on OVHcloud but been looking at enterprise pivots as a risk factor. Any leads on which panels they used for the export? If it's something custom, hard to automate migration for my guys. Their margins on VPS must've been trash if they're dumping retail. 🙏

your margin is my opportunity
