Ngl I got into this whole VPS thing for LLM inference (running 7B models on cheap CPU hosts) but now I need bulk storage for my dataset dumps. 1TB minimum, $40/yr max. My current RackNerd plan has 80GB which is nothing once you start caching huggingface repos. Anyone found a deal that doesn't involve "contact sales" and then getting quoted $200? I don't need fast, just need big and online.

BGP looking glass shows HostHatch pushing storage plans in ro market. 1.2tb hdd vms. No ssd. 36 eur/yr. rt from chi-buf 145ms. p99 packet loss 0.2%. Acceptable for cold storage. Not for inference. Wrong tool.
So heres the thing about cheap storage vps and zfs vs ext4 which everyone always wants to fight about (and I get it I really do because filesystems are one of those things people build whole personalities around like theyre sports teams or something) but the real issue with these budget tb plans is that youre getting a single hdd in a supermicro chassis thats already got 60k hours and no redundancy and the provider is banking on you not actually filling it because oversubscription on io is the whole business model (they did the math (they always do the math)) so zfs would actually save you here because of checksumming and self-healing but these hosts run ext4 because its what their automation spits out and zfs needs arc which eats your "ram" (not really storage lol) and then someone says "just use mergerfs" and now were three levels deep and the romanian provider someone mentioned is pro

HostHatch bf deal last nov was 1tb for 33 eur I grabbed two still running fine no smart errors yet but theyre hdd not ssd so dont expect iops I use mine for media backups and it just sits there rsyncing overnight no issues the zfs thing walt mentioned is overkill for this tier youre not getting ecc ram or proper vdevs anyway ext4 default is fine just keep external backups because cheap hosts die
