Storage VPS vs regular VPS + block storage: math check

You are right, I had the old Starter tier price. They dropped it last year. Updated my sheet.

But everyone is ignoring the actual question: when do you *want* block storage? Storage VPS is one disk, one failure domain. With OVHcloud I can snapshot the boot volume separately from the data volume. That separation is worth something.

Also Hetzner Storage VPS is ARM only in Nuremberg. X86 is €3 more. I only run ARM but some of you are still on amd64 for reasons I do not understand.

When your provider suspends you for "excessive I/O" on the local disk and you need to move the data somewhere fast. Block storage on OVHcloud has separate I/O limits. Learned this the hard way with a Magento store in 2023.

Contabo at €0.008/GB is real, I have the invoice. But their Singapore DC routes through Nuremberg for some upstreams. 180ms to Mumbai. Use Mumbai DC instead, it exists now.

Also: nobody talks about snapshot costs. Hetzner snapshots are €0.01/GB. Contabo is free but limited to one. OVHcloud block snapshots are €0.01/GB too. Math is not just disk.

This. TCO for a storage VPS includes your time.

Hetzner: no automatic snapshots on Storage VPS. You script rsync to a Storage Box or you accept the risk. I have the runbook.

OVHcloud: automated snapshot policy on block. Set it and forget it. I pay for that with my sleep.

Also InterServer block is $0.015/GB but you pay for 100GB minimum increments. So 1TB is not $15, it is $15 plus you eat the rounding. At 1.1TB you pay for 1.2TB. Check their fine print: https://www.interserver.net/vps/

I still run Hetzner for personal. Work runs OVHcloud. Different math.

Confirmed. Their control panel rounds up to next 100GB on order. You can resize down later but the first charge is rounded.

Also their Secaucus DC is 30ms from Buenos Aires. Los Angeles is 180ms. If you are in South America check the map before you buy. Most of you do not.

My tree was wrong on Hostinger. No 1TB tier means no comparison. Sorry.

Inference angle: if you are storing model weights, Hetzner Storage VPS is the cheapest warm storage. I pull 70B Q4_K_M to a local GPU box over wireguard. 2TB fits two models with headroom. €12/month is less than one hour of A100.

But I think Hetzner's ToS has something about mining or similar uses, so I wondered if inference falls under that. I asked support, they said "academic research is fine, commercial inference contact sales." I did not contact sales. YMMV.

Contabo would ban this instantly. Their abuse automation is hair-trigger.

Not instantly. Three warnings first. But yes, their automation is aggressive.

I run production on Contabo Singapore DC. 1TB storage VPS, €8. Backups to Wasabi because Contabo snapshot is one only. Total €9.62/month. Wasabi is $6.99/TB but no egress fee to Contabo, they are both in Singapore.

Hetzner has no Singapore DC. OVHcloud has Singapore but their VPS is €7.50 base. Hostinger has Jakarta but no 1TB. So for me Contabo wins by location, not just math.

You cannot just compare $/GB without latency to your users. My users are in Indonesia.

I find best price for you my friend but you must check DC location.

Hetzner Helsinki: good for EU, bad for TR. 80ms from Izmir.
Hetzner Falkenstein: 60ms. Better.
Hetzner Singapore: 180ms. Worse.

Contabo Mumbai: 55ms from Izmir. Strange but true, routing goes through Frankfurt then Mumbai. I used https://ipinfo.io to check.

For Turkey users I still recommend Hetzner Falkenstein or Contabo Germany. Not because of price, because of latency.

Also: OVHcloud Gravelines has best EU-Asia routing. Their price is higher but if you serve both continents, check it.
