So you want dev/prod separation on a budget that wouldn't buy a decent coffee. Skill issue? Maybe. But let's see what the market offers.

Contabo's €3 "Starter" plan gives you ONE subdomain and Softaculous. That's it. No SSH, no git, no CI/CD. You want staging? You get a subdomain. Clone your WordPress, break it, fix it, clone it back. Or use Hetzner—they at least give you 3 subdomains on the cheapest tier.

Honestly? Just use a VPS. €4 at OVHcloud gets you a whole Debian box. Docker, nginx, whatever. But then you're managing the server. Skill issue confirmed.

What's your actual traffic? Under 1K/day? Just edit live and keep backups. I SAID IT. Fight me.

Actually, the technical constraint here is (as prague1983 noted) the lack of containerization (or even (basic chroot environments)) on shared hosting.

What I do (on my own infrastructure (nested Proxmox )): LXC container per environment. $3 won't get you there.

For your use case: Softaculous staging is (actually (surprisingly)) robust. Contabo's implementation clones DB + files in ~90 seconds. I've timed it.

Super mabagal yung Softaculous clone diba? Like 5 minutes tapos timeout pa minsan.

Pero ok naman. Nag-edit ako ng theme doon tapos export lang. Super easy.

Anyway at 3am I just symlinked wp-content to a git repo and wrote a post-receive hook that rsyncs to live

Idk why I do this

It worked until it didn't. Now I have a cron job that prays for me instead
