Been running fio on my Contabo "SSD" VPS for two days. Something stank. 

randread: IOPS=847, lat=47.3ms
For context, my home NVMe box does 780K IOPS before breakfast. But how much RAM? 2GB. On a 4GB plan. ZFS ARC starving, I bet.

Opened ticket. Support says "SSD cached pool." Technically true. I asked cache ratio. 1% SSD, 99% HDD. One percent. They want "SSD" pricing for this.

Who else got burned? My backup box at Hetzner has 32GB ARC and actually flies. This is why I stopped trusting spec sheets.

1. This is why I always ask for ATTO or CrystalDisk numbers
2. "SSD" means nothing legally
3. Provider tricks I have seen:
A) SSD boot, HDD data
B) tiered storage with "hot" data on flash
C) "SSD-powered" meaning one Intel Optane in a chassis of rust
4. Your IOPS number is diagnostic
5. I would demand refund or migration

(oh this old dance) (Contabo pulled this (I think it was 2024? (maybe Vultr (no, Vultr was the RAM oversubscription thing)))) the "technically true" defense is (frankly) insulting to anyone who (like you (clearly)) knows what IOPS actually mean. I had a provider once tell me "enterprise SAS" counted as SSD because (get this) "solid state of rotation" (their words (not even joking (I have the ticket somewhere))) anyway your fio numbers tell the whole story no need for their marketing to (attempt to) interrupt

SWEdish hösting companies tried this on me once. "NVMe" meant "SERver room has NVMe somewhere." FIKA that noise. I moved to OVHcloud — https://www.ovhcloud.com — after they admitted "hybrid pool" upfront. Honesty is CHEAp. DIskonest SSD claims are EXPENSIvE.
