Snapshot-based backups: my provider's 'daily' was weekly for a month

I believe I have found a discrepancy in my provider's backup scheduling.

I have been with RackNerd's Los Angeles location since October. Their control panel promises daily snapshots for all VPS plans. Last week I needed a restore from three days prior, but the most recent snapshot was eight days old.

I wrote to support. They insisted the snapshot ran daily. I asked for logs. After some delay, they admitted "a timezone configuration issue" meant my "daily" snapshots were actually taken weekly for the past month.

I have since verified this against their API timestamps. I thought I should share in case others here use RackNerd. I may be wrong, but this feels like systematic misrepresentation rather than a simple bug.

Same thing happened to me at Hetzner Bangkok, I thought I was crazy my "daily" was every Tuesday only, they said "timezone confusion" too, I moved to Hostinger now much better

We've received multiple reports about this pattern across providers in the "budget" tier. A few notes:

  • Always verify snapshot timestamps independently via API or filesystem metadata
  • Do not trust control panel "last backup" displays without cross-checking
  • Consider local rsync to secondary storage regardless of provider promises

RackNerd https://www.racknerd.com has been contacted for comment. Their official response cites "a legacy cron expression that failed to account for DST transitions in the Asia/Tokyo zone."

We find this explanation technically implausible. — Admin

Same cron excuse from Contabo last year! They told me "UTC confusion" for three months of weekly "dailies"! Check your logs! Check your timestamps! Never trust the dashboard!
