Six months on Contabo's €3 GRE tunnel

Two outages so far
Latency is solid but
Wondering if anyone else is using them

So I have been running this GRE tunnel (actually back in my day we called them "tunnels" without the GRE part, specifically I mean 2019 when I was using wireguard 0.0.20191212 on alpine linux 3.10 (which was actually quite stable (unlike the 3.11 release (which broke my zfs setup)))) through Contabo for six months now and wanted to share honest experience.

Two unplanned outages. First was 4 hours in march, no status page update until hour 3. Second was 90 minutes in june, they blamed upstream but never named provider. Routing is consistent though, latency stable 18-22ms to my CloudCone endpoint. I use https://uptimerobot.com to watch it.

For $3/month I cannot complain much. It is fine for my lab (pihole, internal wiki, nothing critical). Would not put anything customer-facing on it.

Kiddo you paid three dollars and expected five nines? I run my shitf key into the ground daily and even I know better.

Contabo is budget tier. You want reliability go pay Leaseweb prices. I pay €15 for my GRE and sleep fine at night!
