Hello everyone, can share my experience here. We have small network in Kalimantan, fiber is difficult to find so we use satellite from Contabo as backup link. Running BGP over this is possible but need slow-slow adjustment.
Main challenge is hold time. Default 180 seconds not enough because RTT 600ms+ to our upstream at OVHcloud. We adjust to 240 seconds, also keepalive 80 seconds. CPU usage on router go up a bit but not problem.
For prefix announcement, we only send /24 summary. Full table is impossible, memory not enough and convergence time too long. Better to use default route from satellite, announce our PI space only.
My opinion: for backup this can work, thank you. For primary? Masochism only wkwkwk. Packet loss during rain make you want to cry. But still better than no backup.
