Supermicro x9 boards | bmc is paranoid | any rpm deviation | instant critical alarm | ipmitool sel list | pages of fan errors

The problem | noctua fans spin slower | bmc expects 6000+ rpm | sees 2000 rpm | assumes failure | ramps all fans | louder than stock

The fix | resistor on pwm wire | 1k ohm | tricks bmc | reports higher rpm | actual rpm stays low | cat silence | grep happiness

My supermicro | nf-a4x20 pwm | 1k resistor in series | pwm pin | ground unchanged | bmc reads ~5500 rpm | actual ~2200 rpm | sort -u | wc -l | one happy pavel

Warning | resistor gets warm | use 1/2 watt minimum | mount away from plastic | verify with ipmitool sensor | fan1 should show 5000+ | actual noise should be whisper

I Am Using The Noctua On The Veaver Board And The Resistor Trick Is Working. The BMC Is No Longer Screaming.

I Am Thinking The 1k Ohm Is Safe But I Am Worying About Fire. The Resistor Gets Very Varm. I Am Using The Metal Oxide Type Now.

Just use ipmitool raw to disable the fan sensor entirely

This sets fan mode to "full" then you control via pwm manually. OR just use a board that doesn't treat you like a child. Supermicro BMC is the systemd of hardware management—overbearing, poorly documented, and convinced it knows better than you.

But your resistor math is wrong anyway. PWM frequency on X9 is 25kHz, you need to check the pull-up voltage. 1k might work, might not, might cook the fan controller. Verify with scope or don't give advice.

Hey folks gonna be real with you

I tried this mod on my X10 last month, super stoked about silent rack. Used 470 ohm because I wanted extra headroom. Resistor got hot, melted the fan housing, took photos for reddit before I yanked power.

The "silent" mod caught fire folks. Not making this up. Used 1/4 watt like a noob. Fixed it with proper 2w ceramic and now it's fine. Gonna update my blog with corrected steps.

We used to solder resistors inline and pray the BMC didn't notice.

Your guide reminds me of the old Overclock.net threads about fan resistor mods. Same principles, same risks, same satisfaction when it finally quiets down. The Supermicro X8 generation was actually worse about fan curves, they hardcoded tables you couldn't override without firmware patching.

Warm storytelling about warm resistors. Be careful out there.
