Reliable dedicated server around $25-30/mo — realistic or fantasy?

Been shopping for a cheap box to colo at my buddy's place but figured I'd check what's out there turnkey first. $25-30 is what I used to pay for a E3 v3 back in 2019. Wondering if that's still doable in 2026 for something that won't cook itself in a month.

Looking for:

• Real IPMI (not this fake "KVM over web" garbage)
• ECC RAM, even if it's DDR3
• At least 2 drive bays

What generation Xeon are we talking at this price? V4? Scalable Bronze? Or is it all auction floor Haswell with 200W idle draw?

For that money you get auction floor stuff, no way around it

• Xeon E5-2670 v2 or v3
• 32-64GB DDR3/DDR4 ECC
• 2x 4TB SATA HDD or 1x 480GB SSD if youre lucky
• 1Gbit capped at 10-20TB

For that money you get what you pay for. Ive seen OVHcloud dump E5-2680 v3 boxes at €28 with 2x 8TB HGST drives but the RAID card is some LSI 9211 flashed to IT mode and good luck getting a replacement battery.

HDD vs SSD tradeoff at this tier is brutal. 2x4TB spinners in ZFS mirror = usable. Single 480GB SSD = fast until it isnt, and at this price its probably a Samsung SM863 with 80% wear.

A Supermicro chassis, redundant power, someone on the other end of a phone who knew what a DIMM was.

Kids these days see "dedicated server" and expect Ryzen 9 performance at pocket change prices. Mark my words, the race to the bottom on these auction platforms will end with someone shipping a chassis full of bricks. I have seen it before.

At twenty-five dollars you are not the customer. You are the product being sold to investors who count "servers deployed" without ever asking how many actually POST. The margins on E5 v3 hardware went negative years ago; the only reason they still move is because some warehouse in New Jersey has ten thousand of them and the alternative is e-waste fees.

You want reliable? Reliable starts at sixty. Everything below that is gambling with someone elses e-waste.

I've been with Hetzner for a couple of years now and this is what I'm actually paying for a similar box.

My current setup runs me about EUR 27 per month and includes:

• Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4 (8 cores, 16 threads @ 2.10GHz base)
• 32GB DDR4-2133 ECC Registered
• 2x 960GB Enterprise SATA SSD (software RAID-1)
• 1Gbps port, 20TB monthly transfer
• IPMI 2.0 with dedicated NIC
• SLA: 99.9% power and network

Mine doesn't have NVMe either, I got it through the server auction. The benchmark numbers I saw floating around for $29 with NVMe don't match anything I've been able to order. Status page is here if you need it: https://status.hetzner.com

My node is in Falkenstein. Hardware replacement has been same-day for me but I had to file tickets during business hours.

Ok so lets math this out

Hetzner: €29 / 32GB = €0.91 per GB RAM
Contabo: €27 / 32GB = €0.84 per GB RAM
My cheapest box is a €4/mo NAT VPS at RackNerd = $0.58 per GB but thats 1GB RAM so

Dedicated at under a buck per GB is actually decent in 2026. Back in 2022 I was paying $1.40/GB for "budget" dedis.

BUT power draw. @Carl you mentioned 200W idle. My actual kill-a-watt on a E5-2680 v3 = 165W at wall with 2 SSDs. At $0.15/kWh thats $18/mo just in electricity. So these hosts are either:

• Losing money
• On $0.08/kWh power deals
• Lying about the specs

IMO the gap between "works" and "reliable" is wider than the price gap.

YMMV a lot with these auction-era boxes. I've had a E5 v3 at Contabo run 18 months no issues, and a supposedly identical one at InterServer need a motherboard swap in month 3. Both $27 range. Take it with a grain of salt when people say "all E5s are trash" or "all E5s are fine" — the variance is the whole story.

If you need IPMI that actually works for remote reinstalls, test it week one. Some of these "IPMI included" setups are on ancient firmware that wont talk to modern browsers. Ask me how I know.

For true reliability at $25-30 I'd maybe look at splitting into two $14 VPSes with failover instead. Not the same use case, I know, but worth considering.

Route matters more than CPU at this tier

Route via NYC adds 74ms if youre in EU. Route via AMS adds nothing.

For that money you get what SingaporeRep tested but the network is oversold during peak. Ive seen Contabo drop to 200Mbit at 21:00 CET. Hetzner more consistent but youre transatlantic unless youre actually in NA east.

I have requested data processing agreements from three hosts in this price range and received meaningful documentation from one. Hetzner, to their credit, responded with a standard DPA within 48 hours. Contabo directed me to a privacy policy last updated in 2023. OVHcloud did not respond in two weeks. For EU customers, this is not merely a legal curiosity — it is a liability. The hardware discussion is relevant, but I would advise Carl to consider where his data will physically reside and under which jurisdiction. A $27 server in a jurisdiction with no adequacy decision may cost significantly more than $27 in the event of a regulatory inquiry. This is the perspective of someone who has seen small operations receive letters they could not afford to answer.
