RAID 10 is the only RAID for production dedicated servers

Back in 2009, I managed a fleet of Supermicro boxes with 3ware controllers. RAID 10 saved us twice when drives failed during heavy write loads. They don't make them like that anymore — those 3ware cards just kept going.

So I've always pushed RAID 10 for anything that matters. Fast rebuild, best performance, you lose half your space but sleep at night.

But I keep seeing RAID 6 recommended for "cold storage" and similar. Am I stuck in the past? Is there a workload where RAID 6 actually beats 10 in production, not just in theory?

Running some new RackNerd boxes, trying to decide before I provision 24 drives.

Rebuild time on 24 drives matters more than striping speed. Test your access pattern before deciding. Locked if this becomes another ZFS holy war.
