Support at RackNerd asked for my root password "to investigate" a network issue I reported. I refused and cited basic security practice. They escalated me to "difficult customer" tier and threatened termination of service.
There is no legitimate reason. None. Virtualization environments use serial console, VNC, or rescue modes. Any provider needing your root password is either incompetent or malicious. The "virtualization tax" you pay for KVM over OpenVZ includes proper isolation; this provider clearly doesn't understand their own stack.
I run cgroup v2 with proper namespaces. They don't need my credentials. They need better tooling.
Has anyone else experienced this with RackNerd or similar budget operations?
