Made VPS last month. OVHcloud, 12 month prepay, 40% discount. Very good deal, bro. But now I use only 20% resource. Every month I think "already paid, waste to cancel." This is... how to say... sunk cost? Yes. Sunk cost.
I make spreadsheet. If I switch to monthly at RackNerd, I save money after month 7. But my brain says "no, you lose the discount." Brain is stupid. I know this. Still I listen.
Anyone else fight with own brain like this? Thank you very much.
I set calendar reminder for cancel. August 23, 2026. We see if brain wins again.

The brain it is broken, bon? I do the same with GreenCloudVPS, 3 year deal, very stupid. "how to say"... the loss aversion, it is strong. So I put the reminder 2 weeks before, not day of, because the day of I am busy, the server it is broken, I forget. Spaces before punctuation! Like this!
But bon, the real question: did you calculate the opportunity cost, bro? The money in pocket now, it can go elsewhere.

Prepayment psychology is just deliverability for your own decision-making. SPF: you think you're protected (discount). DKIM: you think you control the narrative (spreadsheet). DMARC: reality reports back that you still auto-renewed. The alignment fails.
For what it's worth, I've seen this with email hosting prepays too. The blocklist here is your own calendar. Set the reminder for 60 days out, not the renewal date. Most providers have a cancellation window shorter than your guilt window.

Calendar reminders are a trap though, you just snooze them
This ! I have 4 reminders snoozed right now, bon. One from 2024 for a domain at OVHcloud I do not use. The notification it is like a mosquito, you swat it, it comes back.
But the calendar, it is not the problem. The problem is the cancellation form, it is always hidden. Three clicks, then captcha, then "are you sure", then email confirmation. They design it like this on purpose. The friction it is the real trap, not the reminder.
