I have been tracking provider migrations since January 2024. My current count stands at 7 abandoned hosts, with reasons documented as follows:

1. Contabo — network instability exceeding 99.5% SLA threshold (actual: 98.2%)
2. OVHcloud — deprecated Debian 11 images without migration path
3. Vultr — price increase of 340% on renewal without notice
4. Hetzner — RAID failure with 72-hour restore window
5. InterServer — IPv6 routing regression in AS configuration
6. Hostinger — cPanel license termination due to upstream dispute
7. KnownHost — KVM hypervisor patch causing kernel panics on Ubuntu 22.04.3

Average provisioning-to-departure: 4.2 months. Total sunk cost: $847.00 USD.

Recommendation: Maintain a spreadsheet with exit criteria thresholds before signup. Negotiate quarterly billing where possible.

Written, buried in a "plan restructuring" email with the subject line "Exciting updates to your Vultr account." The actual rate table was an attachment I didn't open because I assumed it was marketing. My fault for not reading, their fault for burying a 340% increase in an attachment titled "2024_Pricing_Evolution.pdf"

Lesson learned: every email from a provider gets opened now.
