Simple question. My naming scheme is functional: location-function-number. Fiberwharf-web-01 through fiberwharf-web-47. The graphs don't lie, and neither do hostnames.

But I see elaborate schemes in the wild. Roman emperors. Pasta shapes. Characters from that one show.

Do you name your boxes? What system? Does it scale?

IMO functional naming is underrated for on-call sanity. YMMV if you only run a few boxes.

I tried planets once. Jupiter, Saturn, then I needed more and started on moons. Got confusing fast. Take it with a grain of salt, but descriptive beats clever at 3AM.

That said, my home NAS is called "nest". One exception.
