Good call. I did a 500GB test to Vultr last night. Their Toronto DC from Denver was saturating my 300mbit upload, no multipart issues. Took about 4 hours.

The real surprise was rclone vs rsync. rclone --s3-upload-cutoff 200M --s3-chunk-size 50M was faster by a lot. Default rsync over S3FS was thrashing on the small files.

Still leaning Vultr. The $0.01 egress stings but at least it's printed on the price list in actual size font.

zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.

Has anyone tried Wasabi? They're not in the company list but I see them mentioned in other threads. $6.99/TB flat, no egress fees, but 90-day minimum storage per object.

For true cold archive where you write once and read maybe never, that minimum feels like a hidden cost.

Not in my comparison because they bill USD and I'm trying to stay off US infrastructure for tax reasons. But yeah, the 90-day minimum is real. Delete a 1GB file after 30 days, you pay for 60 more days of nothing.

Also their "no egress" has fair use limits. Friend got throttled at 2x storage downloaded in a month. Read the fine print.

I run a small hosting reseller in Mumbai. For my clients doing backups, I push them toward Hetzner Storage Box, not their object storage. €0.006/GB, rsync/sftp/WebDAV, no API nonsense.

It's not S3-compatible though. If you need S3 for your application, different story. For human-driven archives, way simpler.

Storage Box egress is free within Hetzner, charged from outside. And the bandwidth is solid to Europe, mediocre to US west coast. From Denver you'd be going through a lot of pipes.

Also max 10TB per box last I checked. Steveipw needs 43TB, so that's 5 boxes minimum.

This thread convinced me to check my own backup costs. I'm paying Backblaze B2 $0.005/GB storage, $0.01/GB egress. Similar to Vultr but with better tooling.

The catch is they don't have a Mumbai DC. My restores go through Singapore or US west, latency is rough for anything interactive. Fine for cold archive though.
