2016: borrowed $800 from parents for a Xeon E5-2670, 32GB DDR3, some sketchy SuperMicro board off eBay. Finally sent the last $50 yesterday. Took 10 years because I kept "investing" in upgrades instead of paying them back.

It's still running. Gentoo, custom kernel, compiled everything with -march=native. YABS (https://bench.sh) says 45K disk, which beats my $5 CloudCone VPS. Single-thread is garbage obviously but it's MY garbage.

Specs pic incoming if anyone cares. This thing has outlived three relationships and two jobs.

Right then, proper dedication that. Ten years to pay off the folks and you kept it running Gentoo? You're a madman, cheers lads. 🦡 My first box was a Pentium 4 that caught fire, so you've got me beat on longevity if not on smoke damage.

Congratulations but WARNING: decade old kernel with custom patches is SECURITY NIGHTMARE. No fail2ban mentioned, no firewall rules, probably running SSH on 22. WHAT COULD GO WRONG: remote exploit in custom kernel module, Gentoo compile flags expose attack surface, old OpenSSL if you haven't updated. Run nmap against yourself immediately! 👀

Is good you pay back. What power consumption now? In my country electricity expensive, old Xeon maybe not worth run 24/7.
