Five-Year Prepaid Hosting Commitment

In 2019, I acquired a "lifetime" prepaid arrangement with OVHcloud. The following represents my documented observations across the full term.

  • 2019 Q3: Deployment of 4 vCPU / 8 GB RAM / 160 GB SSD instance
  • 2020 Q1-Q4: Baseline performance stable, network throughput at 1 Gbps symmetric
  • 2021 Q2: First degradation event, sustained disk I/O latency increase from 2ms to 47ms
  • 2022 Q4: CPU steal time measured at 15-40% during peak hours
  • 2023 Q3: Network throughput capped to 100 Mbps without notification
  • 2024 Q1: Three unscheduled outages totaling 73 hours
  • 2025 Q1: Instance suspended without cause, restored after 11 days

Current status: OVHcloud support unresponsive to tickets exceeding 14 days.

I am migrating remaining workloads to KnownHost infrastructure.

I bought their 2019 "lifetime" for my wordpress agency in Lyon

By 2022 the cpu was so slow my clients call me asking why hosting is worse than shared

Voilà, I check the node and find the load average at 47 on 8 cores

They moved us to crypto miners, I am certain

Bro I am on same OVHcloud deal
My idle cpu was always at 80%
I thought I got hacked.
Checked processes and found some "xmrig" running
They are mining on our idle cycles
$89 for 5 years and they still want more!

Switched to Vultr last month

2024-11-14: I ran 

perf top
on my "idle" OVHcloud instance. 73.2% of CPU time consumed by a process named 
nw-daemon
, which on inspection was a renamed Monero miner. The binary was located in /opt/OVHcloud/helpers/ and had a systemd service set to "restart always".

The bloody provider had installed this in a "routine maintenance" update on 2024-08-03. I have packet captures and disk images preserved at 2.4 TiB total. My contract specified "fair use of shared resources" but did not disclose conversion of my prepaid resource into a cryptocurrency mining operation.

I am documenting everything for small claims. The 5-year prepay seemed prudent in 2019 at €0.83/month equivalent. The actual cost accounting for downtime, migration labour, and degraded service exceeds €340 in real terms.

European date format used throughout: 14/11/2024.
