I see this daily. Customer hits resource limit on shared plan, panics at "root access" concept, stays overlimit rather than upgrade. Industry-standard practice is to start with managed VPS. You get dedicated resources without the sysadmin burden. Upstream handles kernel patches, control panel updates, initial hardening.
Fear usually comes from seeing unmanaged VPS horror stories. Different product entirely.
What specifically scares you about the move? Happy to share what I've seen work for others in same spot. :)
I moved my own sites off shared hosting last year and this is what I learned the hard way:
Assess current usage: CPU minutes, RAM peaks, disk I/O patterns
Match to managed VPS tier with 30% headroom
Verify backup integrity before migration
Request staging environment for testing
I ended up on Hetzner's cloud after comparing what I actually needed. Their auction bare metal is tempting but I wanted something I could resize without a reinstall.
What I pay now:
CX11: 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM, 20GB SSD — €4.15, fine for staging
CPX11: 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM, 40GB NVMe — €6.10, where I started
CPX21: 2 vCPU, 8GB RAM, 80GB NVMe — €10.60, where most of my clients landed
No control panel license included, no managed patches. I handle monitoring myself with UptimeRobot and apticron. Their docs are decent but there is no phone support — ticket only, and the identity check at signup was stricter than any host I've used. Worth it for the price to performance though.
Rangga which Contabo node did they put you on? I see 34ms via KnownHost from Amsterdam to their Amsterdam pool, curious if managed VPS gets better routing or same upstream.
