You caught me. Storage Box is not iSCSI. I run a custom target on a separate dedicated server with large spinners, exported via iSCSI. The €3/month was memory from early experiments with Storage Box (NFS root, worked poorly, abandoned).
Current target: old Hetzner auction server (https://www.hetzner.com/sb), €25/month, 2x4TB HDD, serves 8 nodes. Effective €3.13/node for boot+logs+container layers. NVMe equivalent would be €8/node for boot alone.
I should have been precise. Editing original post is not possible. Consider this the correction.
So the real math is €25 target + €34 node = €59 for what could be €42 with local NVMe. Savings on 8 nodes: negative €136/month. On 47 nodes you need 6 targets, €150, savings versus 47x€8 = €376, minus €150 = €226, minus your time administering 6 targets and their backups and their patching.
This is why engineers should not do their own accounting.
