New gTLD round 2026-2027 ICANN fee alone is $185K evaluation period 12-18 months then you need infrastructure EPP backend whois server abuse handling annual fees around $25K ive run the numbers for a hobby TLD not viable unless you have 10K+ domains at $40/year break-even year five power draw of the registry backend matters less than you think maybe 2U of low-power atom boxes the real cost is legal review and compliance one policy dispute and youre burning rack months on lawyers so im ignoring it unless someone wants to fund my .homelab fantasy ill stick to renting ips

Bruno22 you are not ready for this! 185k is just the application fee! You need proof of funds! Technical expertise! Years of backend experience! I looked at this for.hack in 2012! Burned six months on paperwork! Got rejected! The only people winning here are lawyers and consultants! Save your money! Buy a /24 instead!

IMO the math only works at scale YMMV but ive seen two previous rounds most successful were geographic or brand TLDs with existing marketing budgets niche community TLDs struggled unless they had guaranteed anchor tenants take it with a grain of salt but I'd want 500 pre-registrations at $50/year committed before I touched the application otherwise youre subsidizing ICANN for no return
