My RAID 5 rebuild failed at 97%. Second drive failure during rebuild. 4TB array gone. In my country this is two months salary.
Running four WD reds, three years old. SMART looked okay. Now two drives click, one shows pending sectors, one is fine.
Question: is RAID 6 worth the capacity loss? Or ZFS? I am rebuild this but want no repeat.
phở at 3AM, deploy at 4
RAID 5 is a trap! Double failure window during rebuild is real! RAID 6 or ZFS raidz2 or accept the risk! No excuses!
I run RAID 0 on my backups and have no regrets yet! Zero! The speed! The thrill!
Serious though: raidz2 with monthly scrubs! Automated! Monitored! Or cry again!
Network okay. Raid bad. Backup good.
Raid 6 = two disk safety. Rebuild time long. Stress high. Perkele.
zfs better. Scrub find bit rot. Raidz2 minimum.
Hel rule: backup exist or data not exist.
