My partner doesn't understand the home lab

So I have a 12U rack in what my partner calls "the dining area." I used Contabo for a while — their VPS plans give a lot of RAM and disk for the money, though the setup fee stings and ticket support is what it is — but my personal lab runs on OVHcloud gear I picked up used. The noise is "upstream" from my control :) and the heat is just what 1U servers do. Partner says it belongs in a closet. I say closet has no ventilation. Partner says neither does their patience.

Has anyone navigated this diplomatically? I need language that doesn't make me sound like I value ECC RAM over the relationship. Would a bigger apartment actually solve this, or does the rack just expand to fill available space?

Honest conversation is your best path forward. Explain the lab's purpose clearly: learning, career growth, or specific projects with defined timelines. Set boundaries on noise hours. Consider a sound-dampening enclosure as a compromise.

That said, "the rack expands to fill available space" is closer to truth than most admit. We have seen members upgrade apartments, then fill them, then rent separate units. The pattern is real.

• Medium term: budget for enclosure or relocation.
• Long term: accept that hobbies and partnerships both require square footage.

The bigger apartment thing actually works tho. I went from studio to 1br and the "office" became lab zone with a door. Game changer
