So basically I bought 3x used server, 10Gb switch, UPS, and noise dampening for apartment. Did math last night and over 3 years its basically same as colocation at local place, maybe more because electricity in tokyo is crazy

  • Servers: 2400 USD
  • Network gear: 800 USD
  • UPS + PDU: 600 USD
  • Electricity estimate 3yr: 1800 USD
  • My sanity from noise: priceless??

Total ~5600 USD. Colo quote I got was 150/month for 4U with 1Gbps and 10A power. 3 years = 5400. And they have actually redundant cooling bro (´;ω;`)

I thought I was being smart avoiding "cloud tax" but basically I built expensive heater in my living room. Anyone else do this math too late??

You have written "its" twice where you need "it's". The contraction matters when you mean "it is".

Your colocation arithmetic omits setup fees. Most providers charge 100-200 for cross-connect or remote hands. Factor this.

Semicolon usage in your list is inconsistent. You used periods in the first four items and double question marks in the fifth. Actually, pick one terminator and apply it uniformly.
