My experience with 'launch promos' that never actually launched

Hey folks, wanted to share a cautionary tale and hear if others got caught in similar.

Back in January I pre-paid KnownHost for their "beta founder" pricing. $6/mo for what was supposed to be 2CPU/4GB, NVMe, "launching February." They had a slick landing page, Discord with 800 people, the whole thing. I figured, it's KnownHost, how vapor can it be?

It's August. My "server" is still "being provisioned in the next batch." I've opened four tickets. The responses got slower and slower, then copy-paste. Their Discord went quiet in May. The status page shows "all systems operational" for a datacenter that apparently doesn't exist yet — https://status.knownhost.com.

I'm not out much money, but I'm out time and trust. Has anyone actually gotten a refund from these "delayed launch" hosts? Or am I just funding someone's AWS certification course?

Whence came this plague of vaporhosts, I find myself pondering, for it seems the modern age hath produced a breed of provider that doth promise the moon and stars upon their launch page yet delivereth nothing but wind and empty words, much like ye olde server I once leased from a firm in 2014—though that tale is perhaps too digressive for this forum—wherefore I say unto thee, @kat_fold, that methinks thy patience exceeds that of Job himself, and I would counsel that thou chargest back with all due haste lest these knaves profit further from thy forbearance.

I had the same thing happen with a "founder" deal in 2019.
