My Contabo VPS experiment: 90 days later

Three months ago I spun up a Contabo 512MB KVM in their "Seattle" location for €4/mo. Here is what happened.

  • Uptime: 99.1% per my OVHcloud monitor. Two unplanned reboots, both during "network maintenance" windows with 15 min notice.
  • Support tickets: 4 opened. Response times 6h, 14h, 2h, and one still unanswered from 11 days ago about a kernel panic I suspect was neighbor noise.
  • The VPS runs a WireGuard node and a static site. Nothing critical. I firewall everything except 22/51820, run fail2ban with aggressive defaults, and snapshot weekly to my home NAS.

I expected it to die. It has not died. This worries me more than if it had died.

Current bill: $12. Total support hours invested: probably 4. Value proposition unclear.

Will renew for science unless they change the price.

airgapped, encrypted, faraday'd, still worried

Ngl I thought these Contabo budget boxes were gonna be toast in a month

99.1% is honestly better than my last GreenCloudVPS gpu instance that cost 40x more and got preempted every tuesday

What are you even doing with 512MB tho, cant run inference on that. My phone has more vram

CUDA cores are my love language
