My bandwidth graph looks like a heartbeat, what's wrong?

Hey so my minecraft box bandwidth graph looks like a literal heartbeat on the monitor, like up down up down every 2 hours exactly. No lag in valheim but the graph is sus. My dedi at Contabo been doing this for a week. Anyone seen this? Gg if you know what mod causes this

Hey folks that's super classic cron pattern. Gonna guess you got something hitting the network on a timer. Backup script? rsync? Check your crontab, probably every 2h. Happened to me once, was a monitoring script gone wild. Fixed it in 5 min

rsync every 2h. Cron job. Bandwidth spike. Check crontab -e. Happened to me last month. Ticket open with OVHcloud. They found nothing. Was cron. Facepalm.

436 days. reboot is surrender.

How do I check crontab? 😅 is that like a task scheduler? My box at Hetzner maybe has same thing, graph looks weird too. Sorry if dumb question

Crontab -e lists them, -l just shows

Every 2h exactly sounds too clean for minecraft mods, more like backup

Thanks! Found it. Was a backup script from Hetzner's default image. Every 2h to their storage box. Graph flat now.

Wait that's exactly it. I never set up backups to Contabo storage, but I installed their monitoring agent last week. Let me check...

Their agent phones home every 2h? That's aggressive for a dedi. I run my own Prometheus on a box in Hetzner Falkenstein, pull every 15s, no spikes because it's constant.

Constant low traffic vs bursty high traffic. Both show flat on most graphs unless you zoom. The heartbeat is from the gap between spikes.
