I want to run a minecraft server for my friends here in Johannesburg and I looked at Hostinger and they have a 2GB VPS for like $3 a month which seems ok but I dont know if 2GB is enough and last time I tried this was back in 2020 when I had that broken laptop and the cat knocked over my coffee and the server crashed and I remember the lag was terrible but that was only 1GB RAM and also I had chicken for breakfast this morning and the weather is nice today not too Hot which is good for the server room I guess so anyway is 2GB enough for maybe 20 players and some plugins or do I need more and has anyone used Hostinger in Mumbai because I need low ping for local players and my friend says he ran 40 slots on 1GB but that sounds impossible to me

¡Hola! For 20 players with plugins, 2GB will be tight. I ran test on Vultr JHB last month—PaperMC with 15 players, 3GB was comfortable. Sent ticket to Hostinger yesterday asking about their burst policy, still waiting. For African game server you want local peering, check if they have presence at NAPAfrica! If you need help with optimisation, I can share my server.properties. Cheers!

To correct a misconception: your friend running 40 slots on 1GB likely used a lightweight fork (Cuberite, not vanilla) or aggressive view-distance capping. Vanilla Minecraft 1.20+ server with 20 players requires approximately 1.5GB baseline, plus 512MB per 10 players for chunk loading, plus plugin overhead. For 20 players with moderate plugins, 2GB is technically sufficient but leaves no headroom for garbage collection spikes. Hostinger peers at NAPAfrica in Amsterdam and London; check their IRR entries for upstream path. If latency exceeds 15ms to local eyeballs, the issue is your last mile, not their transit.

iBGP, eBGP, don't care, just peer

¡jajaja! 40 slots on 1GB is very miracle ¿no? I try this once on Hetzner and was disaster, server crash every hour. Maybe your friend use very old version, 1.8 need less. I think 2GB is minimum for 2026, but for 20 players I recommend 4GB if you can pay. Hostinger is good provider, I have bps (vps, jajaja) with them in JHB for two years, stable. But bandwidth cap is problem for game server, check that first. I write long post before but delete, too much drama. Short: get more RAM, avoid pain.
