Moving from cPanel to Hestia without crying

Ok so ive done this migration four times now (twice for clients who panicked when cPanel pricing went insane and twice for my own stuff because I keep changing my mind about which provider to use) and heres the thing nobody tells you which is that the email part is actually the worst part not the websites everyone thinks websites are hard but apache to apache or nginx to nginx thats just config files and maybe some php version headaches if youre running old joomla or whatever but email is where you will actually lose data and hair and probably some friends if youre doing this for someone else so step one (and this is critical despite what some guides say) is do NOT use the built-in backup restore if you have more than about 50 email accounts because it will timeout and leave you with half-restored mailboxes and no clear way to resu

I found the database migration more difficult than email. CPanel's mysqldump often includes DEFINER clauses that fail on Hestia's default MariaDB setup. I had to sed those out manually.

For Asia-Pacific users, I suggest testing during your local morning when support forums are active in US/EU, in case you need help.

Mark my words, Hestia will go the same route as cPanel eventually. 20 years in this business, I've seen every free panel either die or monetize. The cycle repeats. You'll be migrating again in 5 years, probably to something that doesn't exist yet.

Back when Vesta was clean, before the supply chain incident, we thought that was the final answer too.

"the cloud" in scare quotes is where this problem starts. CPanel on shared hosting is a toy, Hestia on a toy VPS is still a toy. Get a real server, bare metal, 16 cores minimum, workstation class ECC RAM, run your own mail stack on hardware you control.

I migrated 200 accounts from cPanel to self-hosted mailcow on a proper box last year. Zero timeouts. Zero crying. Because the underlying hardware wasnt some oversold "cloud" garbage fighting for disk IO with 500 neighbors.

Thank you for guide, I make a server up with Hestia last month and email was problem exactly as you say. I use your rsync method and works much better.

One thing I add: Spanish users often have ñ and accents in email folders, check encoding on both sides or you get corrupted folder names. I learn this with difficult way.

Also Hestia firewall default blocks some ports that cPanel leaves open, if you use external SMTP service you must add rule or mail queue stops.
