What a night! We finally pulled the trigger on migrating our primary rack from Leaseweb's legacy floor to their new cold-aisle setup. 4-hour window, midnight to 4 AM. Here's how it went!

  • 00:00 — Started with network core (Cisco N3K), 15 min to power down and label
  • 00:45 — Storage shelf first, 4U JBOD, heavier than expected!
  • 01:30 — Compute nodes, 32U total, 8x Ampere Altra boxes — insane value these things, run circles around the old xeon gear
  • 02:45 — Network re-cabled, tested links
  • 03:20 — Everything powered, BIOS checks, PXE booting
  • 03:53 — Final ping test, all green!

7 minutes to spare! Couldn't believe it. The Ampere nodes boot so fast, saved us probably 20 minutes vs the old gear.

Full specs of new setup in my sig if anyone wants. Would do again — but maybe with one more person next time, my back is killing me.

one small ping for man...

Impressive timing, to be precise. As far as I know Leaseweb does not guarantee the new cold-aisle power density in writing — have you verified the SLA for the new floor?

Also from a GDPR perspective I hope the drives were transported within your custody chain, not by facility staff alone. The maintenance window does not override data controller obligations.

Neuland. Aber schnell.

The pipeline | it flows | 40U through the night | cat planning | grep stress | sort -u by priority | wc -l seven minutes | the margin it whispers | sed 's/victory/fragile/g'

| the monitoring | you grep it | or it greps you |

What CPU model in those Altra boxes?

IPv4, IRC, and irssi — fight me
#5

Which Altra SKU did you get

4 hours for 40U? I barely believe it
