Minecraft server on 1GB: modded or vanilla?

¡¿Minecraft server on 1GB RAM with 80 mods is very possible, no?! I have seen it on youtube, the guy had like 20 players and it was fine... Jajaja maybe I am too optimistic but I want to try All the Mods 9 on my Contabo 1GB plan — https://contabo.com/en/vps/. I know people say "no dont do it" but is very doable with modern java, no? The new garbage collector is very good now.

Actually nevermind, I will keep it short. Has anyone run modded MC on 1GB? What flags do I need? I was thinking of using Forge but maybe Fabric is lighter? I have 4 cores at least. ¡gracias!

No. 80 mods on 1GB will crash on startup. Forge alone needs 800MB. Use PaperMC. Vanilla with plugins. 1GB fits 8-10 players if tuned.

I think you underestimate the «modded experience». I ran a small the Create modpack on 768MB once. The trick is how to say the Aikar's flags and dropping view-distance to 4. But yes, 80 mods is very ambitious no? Perhaps 20-30 mods is more realistic. I had to remove the Journeymap and the Hwyla to save memory. The FoamFix is essential also.

(I ran a Paper server for my kid's friend group on 512MB once; it was character-building for all involved.) The real magic is in the JVM flags; Aikar's are table stakes. What nobody mentions is switching to SerialGC below 1GB—G1GC's region overhead eats precious hundreds of megabytes. Also disable spawn chunks; that's 300MB of loaded chunks doing nothing. Semicolons; use them; cherish them.
