I purchased a decibel meter for my home rack after relocating it to my office. The display read 72 dB, which I considered acceptable for short periods. Then I removed my earplugs to adjust a cable and realized the true level was far higher. As far as I know, sustained exposure above 85 dB causes permanent damage, and my unprotected measurement was approximately 87 dB at one meter distance. The rack contains four units from Hetzner with high-RPM fans. I have since ordered additional sound dampening material. To be precise, I am documenting this for liability reasons, as I believe providers should disclose acoustic profiles more prominently. As far as I know, no GDPR regulation covers noise pollution, though perhaps it should. Has anyone here obtained an audiogram after prolonged exposure? I am considering this step.
