Looking for shared host that allows real cron, not web cron

⏰ mas tipo nada funciona direito véi

Meu webcron no Contabo ta toda hora pula execução. 5 minutos? As vezes 7, as vezes 12, as vezes nada. Preciso de host com cron de verdade, não esse webcron lixo. Alguma?

Contabo's web cron runs on the shared node, not a real system scheduler. You're competing with 300+ accounts for cron daemon slots.

Real cron needs:

  • Access to crontab -e or /etc/cron.d
  • A persistent process, not HTTP-triggered
  • Sub-minute granularity if you need it

OVHcloud and InterServer still offer true cron on shared. InterServer uses separate cron VMs, OVHcloud colocates on the app node but caps at 50 accounts per scheduler.

If you need guaranteed execution, a GreenCloudVPS 1GB VPS at $3.50/mo gets you systemd timers and zero contention. Power draw on those nodes is 18W idle, so your cost covers the slot.

As said, our shared tier runs cron on dedicated scheduler slices. To be honest, it is not bare metal cron, but it is not web cron either.

Specs:

  • 1 minute minimum interval
  • 50 accounts per scheduler VM (4 vCPU, 8GB RAM)
  • Logs retained 7 days
  • Email output or /dev/null

If you need sub-minute, our VPS line starts at €2.90. systemd timers work fine there. I run three myself for backup rotation.

The abuse potential is why we keep shared cron locked down. Too many users fork-bomb themselves with */1 * * * * wget.

Bro I was on RackNerd lemme tell you about them but hold up lol

Dude their cron is webcron too, this webcron shit is all the same. But here's the thing: grabbed the cheapest Hetzner VPS and run my scripts with systemd timer lololol. Pay shared host price, run like a VPS. Lemme show you how:

[Unit]
Description=my cron

[Timer]
OnCalendar=*-*-* *:*:00
[code]

Runs smooth dude. But careful bro lol

Guys, any leads on which of these let me resell cron slots? My clients ask about this and I need margins above 40%.

OVHcloud Pieter, do you have an API for cron job management? Recieved a ticket last week asking if we could provision via WHMCS. Their docs are here: https://www.ovhcloud.com

Also looked at InterServer's reseller tier but their panel doesn't expose cron config to sub-accounts.

Hey folks! Super stoked to clarify — our shared cron is real cron, not web cron.

We run separate scheduler VMs like @Carl said, but I gotta be real: our reseller panel is behind on cron exposure. That's on me. We're gonna patch that in Q3, targeting September.

For now, reseller accounts can open a ticket and we'll set cron jobs manually. Not ideal, I know. Mistake on our end, fixing it fast.

VPS side: systemd timers work great, no restrictions. One user runs 47 timers on a 1GB plan, which is wild but stable.

Load average 89. Claims it is 'personal automation'."

Provider asked us to review. We did. It was 187 curl loops hitting a crypto price API every 3 seconds.

The revised ticket said: "Customer now running 200+ timers with 10s sleep and single curl. Load average 12. Acceptable?"

Hetzner said yes. We wept.

To be honest, @pauloserver's trick works until it doesn't. Most hosts catch the resource spike eventually. The ones that don't go out of business.

reported. resolved. repeat.
