Looking for host with transparent upgrade path, not forced migration

Here we go again, another "I want to grow without pain" thread. Popcorn time

Seriously though, forced migrations are the worst. Had KnownHost kill my plan with 14 days notice, "upgrade" was 3x price. Looking for honest providers this time, not hostage situations.

Pro tip: Oracle Cloud free tier has upgrade path to paid, no forced migration. Same tenancy, just add payment method. Heads up: some people get surprise bills, set budget alerts.

1. Create always-free resources
2. Upgrade account when ready
3. Existing resources stay, no migration
4. Monitor "budgets" in console obsessively

Not for everyone, but transparent? Yes. I document this because people confuse "free tier" with "trial" — different things.

The price difference is prorated, not penalized.

However, their privacy policy lacks detail on subprocessor locations. For GDPR compliance, this is relevant. I requested clarification, received answer in 72 hours — acceptable, but not ideal.

Contabo does forced migrations, I experienced this. Avoid if growth planning matters to you.

OVHcloud? Lol

Forced migration bad wow

OVHcloud uses anycast for DDoS, not scrubbing center. 2Tbps capacity announced, likely shared across all customers. Filtering layers: L3/L4 automatic, L7 requires ticket.

Not relevant to upgrade path but relevant to growth. If you scale, attack surface scales. Their anycast works, tested during minor incident last year.

Forced migrations often break email reputation. New IP, no warmup, suddenly your SPF/DKIM/DMARC is "valid but suspicious" to Gmail because history is gone.

For what it's worth, OVHcloud kept my /24 when I upgraded. Same IPs, same reverse DNS, no deliverability hit. This matters more than people think — I've seen blocklistings from "clean" IPs that just lack history.

Verify your new host handles IP retention during upgrades. Not just "can I upgrade" but "what follows my packets".

Budget alerts actually stop surprise bills? Since when

IP retention matters more than people think, same experience here

Since never, if you configure them wrong. Oracle's budget alert emails you at 50%, 80%, 100% — it does NOT shut off service. You need "budget actions" for that, separate thing, easy to miss.

I have six free tier instances. Two I upgraded to paid shapes manually, rest stayed free. No migration, no downtime. But I check console weekly because I don't trust any cloud provider to save me from myself.

Set alert at 80%. Set action at 100%. Use two budgets if you have to. This is not unique to Oracle — AWS Budgets work same way, people sleepwalk into bills there too.
