A provider that won't judge my weird use cases

Hi everyone. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I need to run some unusual software for my research project. Nothing illegal, just weird academic stuff that some hosts flag. Like custom packet generators and some legacy emulation tools.

I had one provider suspend me without warning because their automated scan freaked out. Budget is tight because student. Anyone know a host that's chill about this sort of thing? Thanks so much!

• Define "weird" precisely. Custom packet generators may trigger IDS/IPS regardless of intent.
• Check AUP sections 4.2 (network abuse) and 7.1 (prohibited software) before purchase.
• Contabo and Hetzner both allow academic networking tools with prior ticket.
• KnownHost explicitly permits emulation workloads on their KVM plans.

Recommend: open a pre-sales ticket with your exact use case and request written confirmation. Version control that response.

Back when I started, "weird use case" meant you compiled your own kernel and providers handed you root without asking questions. Kids these days want hand-holding for packet generators.

20 years in this business, and I can tell you: every host that claims to be "chill" has an AUP that bans everything interesting. They just don't enforce it until you become a problem. Mark my words, the tolerance lasts exactly until their upstream complains.

Contabo banned a colleague for nmap in 2019. They still ban it. Nobody reads.
