Offsite backup doesn't require cloud. For what it's worth, I've run Borg to a friend's NAS across WireGuard for 3 years. SPF/DKIM/DMARC of backup is encryption and test restores, not marketing SLA. Correct misconception: friend's house is offsite if >100 miles away.

Edge your backups to a pop near friend. Origin anxiety when cache miss on family photos. Cache hit when restore works. It's 12 now for borg check, was 45 before I tuned chunker — https://www.borgbackup.org. Miss on untested restore = personal failure. Edge solves this, obviously.

  • Evaluate threat model: fire, theft, ransomware.
  • 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite.
  • Optical: M-DISC rated 1000 years, 25GB/50GB, slow writes.
  • Tape: LTO-8 12TB native, eBay $400 drives work if cleaned.
  • Friend's NAS: encrypt with Borg 1.2.6, append-only repo.

Practical recommendation: LTO drive from eBay + verify every quarter.

Teh tape drive from ebay $280 shipped. Recieve 12tb native. Definately cheaper than Vultr $6/mo after 2 years. Im at $0/month now for 4tb backup. Borg to friend nas before this. Friend moved, needed new plan. Alot of tapes on ebay enterprise pulls.

Heads up: BorgBase has 10GB free, enough for configs and docs. Not media.

  • Make always-free instance.
  • Cron rclone sync.
  • Forget snapshots monthly.

IMO tape is underrated for cold storage. YMMV based on humidity and drive maintenance. Take it with a grain of salt, but my eBay LTO-5 drive from 2019 still works, just clean the heads yearly. Friend NAS + tape is my balance. No cloud bill, some hardware risk.
