'Lifetime' deals should be illegal

My origin right now is 12. Used to be 8 before the third "lifetime" host I recommended popped. Three pops in two years, each one a cache miss for everyone who trusted the edge. The latency on refunds? 340 and climbing.

Regulators should treat these as prepaid gift cards with mandatory escrow. Pop the money into a trust, release monthly. If the provider's origin goes dark, users keep their edge. It's 15 now just thinking about it.

I run 52 boxes across 9 "lifetime" deals from 2021-2023

Current status:

  • 3 dead (no refund)
  • 2 "migrated" to monthly plans 😂
  • 4 limping (IPv6 only, "maintenance")
  • 2 actually working

Math: $890 upfront / 52 boxes = $17.11 per box / 48 months = $0.36/GB/RAM/month if I'm generous. Real number is worse since most are dead weight now.

Still bought two more last month. Don't ask.

seedbox, NAS, tape, and three offsite

12 origin to 15 from thinking? That's a wild metric, Celia.

Which two did Hank buy last month?
