Career move. Leaving Contabo enterprise team. Got offer from RackNerd startup. Equity + below-market cash. Burn rate unknown. Team is 4 people. Perkele.

Risk appetite low. Server good. Price bad. Network okay. Want stability. But bored. 15 years ops. No pronouns needed. Just facts.

What burn rate should scare off. What runway is real. Anyone been burned.

  • Colocation for 10 racks: ~€4K/month
  • Transit blend: ~€2K/month
  • 3 engineers at market rate: ~€18K/month
  • Misc (insurance, tooling, travel): ~€3K/month

Total: ~€27K/month. As said, if they raised €500K, runway is 18 months with zero growth. Ask for cash-on-hand and monthly net loss. Dry numbers don't lie.

If they won't share, walk.

Still does. 20 years in this business, kids these days chase startup dreams like 1999 never happened.

Mark my words: 4-person shop, below-market cash, you'll be doing 3AM migrations on a sunday for 'culture'. The equity will dilute to wallpaper. Founder liquidity preference eats you last.

I've seen this film. The sequel is worse.
