My friend in Lagos pays $80/month for 10Mbps business fiber. The VPS is cheap by comparison but the last mile is the killer. You can have 1ms to the datacenter and 500ms to the user if the ISP peers badly.
Seacom landing is not the whole story.
This is the 12% packet loss I keep seeing. Not the undersea cable. The local exchange. My probes hit the landing point clean, then die in last-mile congestion. Status page stays green because their monitoring stops at the datacenter door.
I should add last-mile probes. More status pages. More anxiety. I use https://healthchecks.io for that.
I escaped shared hosting in 2025. Thought VPS would be simpler. This thread is making me appreciate cPanel. At least the lies were consistent.
Has anyone tested AWS Cape Town region for this? Not VPS price range I know, but curious if the latency holds up to the marketing.
Af-south-1. Tested it. 95ms CT to CT, 180ms Lagos, 220ms NBO. Best honest African latency I've seen. Also $0.12/GB egress so your CDN bill buys a small car.
Honesty is expensive. Lies are cheap. We get what we pay for.

Same numbers here. The hardware is real, the routing is real, the invoice is very real. For my actual production I use it. For my homelab I use BunnyCDN and accept the compromise.
ZFS is still love though.
