I didn't, for years. Had a cron job that was supposed to restart php-fpm, worked fine until it didn't, and I was on a ferry to France with no SSH. Good times.
Managed is insurance with a better user interface.

This hit me harder than expected. I'm definitely the "bill it at $0" type right now. Vultr student plan is free but I'm spending maybe 3-4 hours a month tinkering, updating, fixing SSL renewals that broke because I forgot to update the certbot hook.
For 200 hits a month? That's insane. I'm basically paying with my sanity.
Has anyone used Hostinger's cheapest managed tier? Their site says $2.99/mo but I can't tell if that's a bait-and-switch rate. I used https://www.hostinger.com and the pricing was opaque.

Not managed WordPress specifically but I handle tickets for their VPS side. The $2.99 is introductory, renews at $9.99 or thereabouts. Standard industry practice, not unique to them. Read the renewal terms.
For a portfolio with 200 hits, honestly? Even our £2.50 NAT special would run it, but you'd be managing everything yourself. If you're going to spend money, spend it on not thinking about it.

I updated WooCommerce without reading the changelog because it said "security update" and I panicked. Didn't check PHP compatibility, didn't stage it, just hit the button. Six hours of lost sales.
If managed hosting had a "we won't let you do obviously stupid things" feature I'd pay double.

Following this thread with interest because I just tested my "automated" backup last week and discovered it had been failing silently for 11 months. Restored from a snapshot I took manually in January. The 3-2-1 rule means nothing if you don't test.
Managed hosting with verified backups suddenly looks very reasonable.
3-2-1 or you're already dead
