Colo break-even depends heavily on bandwidth commit. 1Gbps unmetered at colo runs 200-400/month. Same pipe on VPS is shared oversold. DDoS scrubbing at colo: you pay for clean pipe or buy your own hardware. Most dont factor filtering layers into math.

Running real numbers. Dell R640 dual 4110, 128GB, picked up eBay 400 shipped. Colo at 1U with 2A draw and 1Gbps: 89/month at my spot. Year one: 1468. Comparable VPS with those specs: 80-120/month depending on provider. Break-even month 14-18. Add IPMI card, rails, drive caddies: call it month 20. After that youre printing money if the hardware survives.
