I waited. 8 months left and the termination fee was something like 70% of remaining commitment, so not worth it. I started the move 4 months before expiry and had dual presence for a while. Cost more short term but fixed the problem.
If your PUE is really 1.38-1.41 then your actual energy use is predictable. The variance is all in their pricing model.
I am with Leaseweb in Singapore and I see the same pattern. Bill swings 20-30% even with flat usage. They call it "electricity cost adjustment" and it tracks some month-lagged oil price or something. I asked three times for the exact formula, got three different PDFs, none with math.
I just budget for the high months now. Annoying but moving is pain.
Following this with interest. I am looking at colo in Europe and Leaseweb was on my shortlist because of the Asian presence. But this thread is making me look harder at Hetzner and Equinix.
Does anyone know if OVH has similar pass-through pricing? Their colo page mentions "energy costs included" but I do not trust marketing language.
OVH colo is fixed price for the term in my experience. I was with them in Gravelines for 2 years, same number every month. But their network had issues and I left for other reasons.
The "included" usually means averaged and baked in, not that energy is free.

Thank you all for the information. I am calculate now: if I take the highest month as my budget, I am pay same as Equinix almost. So maybe I move when contract end.
I am still want to understand this "benchmark" but I am think you are right, is designed to not be understood.
