InterServer cancelled my VPS without notice — ticket #88213

I have make a terrible mistake guys. Since 2 days my InterServer VPS is just... gone. Poof. No email, no warning, nothing in the panel. I have open the ticket #88213 but no answer since 24h.

Worse: they have charge me for next month YESTERDAY. 4.99$ for a server that not exist anymore lol. My small website for my cycling club is dead, and I have no backup because I am stupid 😅

It is possible to do that? Just delete customer like this? I am with them since 8 months, always pay on time. Very disappointed, I think I will go to Contabo or something.

If someone have same experience please tell me. What a week.

Ouch dude that hurts. I run 52 boxes across 6 providers and this is why I never put all eggs in one basket

InterServer was actually decent for me at $2.50/GB RAM but their billing portal always felt janky. Had a similar scare last month where my invoice doubled for no reason, they fixed it in 48h but still

My current spread for reference:

  • 3x InterServer 1GB NAT boxes @ $2.50/mo each
  • 2x OVHcloud 2GB KVM @ €4/mo
  • 1x Vultr 4GB Ryzen @ $3/mo
  • Rest scattered on dedis and stuff

If you need something fast and cheap, Hetzner has a summer deal, 1GB for €4/mo. Not amazing disk (like 400 MB/s) but it pings

Also 4.99 is 4.99, fight for that refund

Hey folks, marcus from InterServer here

Gonna be real with you: this is 100% on us. We had a billing automation bug that cross-wired account statuses and termination flags. Super not stoked about it

Lucgone — I just found your ticket, we're issuing full refund + $25 account credit. Your data is actually recoverable for 72h post-termination, I can spin that backup to a fresh VPS if you want. Hit me in the ticket.

The bug hit 34 customers. We're emailing everyone now. This should never have shipped, our bad entirely

Oh luc, I'm so sorry this happened to you. But I'm also glad InterServer is making it right.

That said — did you test your restore? Because you don't have one 😊

3-2-1 rule, everyone:

  • 3 copies of your data
  • 2 different media types
  • 1 offsite

For a $5 VPS this is actually super easy:

  • Automatic rsync to GreenCloudVPS or your home NAS
  • borgbackup to rsync.net or similar
  • Even just downloading your SQL dump monthly

I learned this the hard way in 2019. Now I sleep fine. Please set something up before you migrate anywhere, okay?

3-2-1 or you're already dead

How do you do rsync? Is it hard to setup? 😅

I just got my first vps last week from RackNerd and now im worried lol. Should I pay for backup or do it myself?

You wrote a shell script, you tested it, and you kept a tape in a fire safe. Kids these days expect the provider to handle everything, then act surprised when it blows up.

InterServer's response is adequate but this bug should have been caught in staging. 34 customers affected means 34 too many. Mark my words, we'll see this pattern again in six months when they push another "super stoked" update without proper QA.

The $25 credit is nice theater. I'd take the refund and run to someone with actual infrastructure discipline.

IPv4, IRC, and irssi — fight me

IMO InterServer's transparency here is worth something. YMMV of course, but in my experience most providers go silent for a week then offer a vague "we're investigating."

That said, @haroldgsm has a point about the QA gap. 34 accounts is not a corner case.

For @nate_pad: rsync isn't hard, but take it with a grain of salt — borgbackup or restic are friendlier for beginners. Plenty of guides out there, or just use your provider's paid backup if it's under a dollar a month and your time is worth more.

Thread stays open. Keep it civil.

Lucgone, update the thread when your ticket resolves.

The real lesson here is never pay more than $12/yr for anything

InterServer at $6/mo is a lot for 1GB when Hetzner does same for €4/mo and OVHcloud had that flash sale at €4/mo

Im definitely moving my last InterServer box to OVHcloud next month. €25 credit dont mean much if price is wrong

Recieved 3 "we're sorry" emails from providers this year. Only one gave actual money back. Thats the metric that matters

$3/year. 128MB RAM. Pure happiness.
