I used a domain broker and saved 40% vs. direct negotiation

Background: needed a specific dictionary-word .com for a community project. Budget $5K. Owner's landing page had a buy-it-now of $12K.

I engaged Vultr's domain brokerage (not affiliated, just picked them based on prior IRR record cleanliness). Process:

  • Broker researched ownership chain, found it had changed hands 3x since 2019
  • Opened at $3.5K, citing comparable sales ($4.2K, $3.8K for similar terms)
  • Owner countered $9K
  • Broker noted pending UDRP risk from trademark filer (public record, WIPO case #2026-XXXX)
  • Settled $4.8K + $480 broker fee (10%)

Net: paid $5,280 for a name listed at $12K. Without broker, I would have either overpaid or walked away.

Broker value isn't just negotiation skill. It's intelligence: ownership history, lien risks, comparable sales databases, timing pressure. For names over $3K where owner is non-responsive or inflated, they earn their fee.

Counterpoint: for hand-reg to $500 names, broker fee structure doesn't work. Owner-direct via WHOIS email is fine there.

Happy to discuss specifics via DM if useful.

Wey GeorgeNmp that's solid but I got a question?

I used a broker last year for a.io, paid $800 fee, never even contacted the owner wey. Just kept saying "owner is considering" for three weeks.

Turns out he was ghosting me while hoping I'd cave and raise offer? Got refund after I threatened chargeback but what the hell!

So like... how do you know broker actually did the work wey?

Just use whois lookup

Skill issue if you need a middleman for a domain

(but seriously, 10% to avoid talking to someone? That's what mutt and a throwaway gmail are for)

10% is cheap. I pay broker for server name, 15%, never meet owner, please explain?

Broker say "relationship with owner" but I think maybe lying? No proof, just trust?

Hard for small bidder

40% off $12K or off actual market wey

You don't, not really. I used Vultr's brokerage for a .org last year, similar process to GeorgeNmp. They sent me the ownership chain docs, the WIPO case PDF, the whole paper trail. But could I verify they actually talked to the owner? No.

My broker at least cc'd me on one email thread with the seller's lawyer. That's the only time I've seen proof of life from the other side.

Fair question. In my case they sent me the WIPO docket PDF and the prior sales comps with dates. I could verify those myself. The smoking gun was the owner dropping from $9K to $4.8K same day the broker mentioned the UDRP risk -- that's not coincidence.

But yeah, your ghosting story is why I went with Vultr specifically. They have a dashboard where you see offer status. "Owner considering" for three weeks with no counter is a red flag any broker should flag, not string you along.

I answer myself: the $12K was fantasy price, nobody pay this. Real market maybe $5-6K for this word.

Broker good at finding the real price, yes. But 10% for this? In France we have SYRELI for .fr disputes, free. For .com you pay.

I think GeorgeNmp got lucky with the UDRP threat. Without this, owner stays at $9K.

Yeah but they didn't flag it wey! Just kept saying "we recommend higher offer to show seriousness." Like bro, I started at $600 for a $2K listed name, that's not lowball that's normal.

Different broker though, not Vultr. Some no-name from a Reddit ad. Lesson learned.

Still wonder if Vultr's 10% is worth it vs just doing the WHOIS dance myself.
