I ran a marathon with a GPS watch from 2012

8 days late but I need to know if Gary ever got his watch back. Also

— seconding this, some of those 2012 units had actual SiRFstar IV chips that hold lock way better than the assisted-GPS garbage in most wearables now. The antenna geometry mattered more than the SoC.

Late to this but

is the most accurate description of consumer GPS I've ever read.

Still curious what the actual watch model was. 73% cache hit ratio is suspiciously good for that era.

Sorry for the slow reply, been off the grid. It was a Garmin Forerunner 610. Not one of the fictional brands, I know, but that's what I had.

The heart rate strap was from 2011 and still worked fine,

Heart rate monitoring accurate enough for zone training
— honestly the strap was more reliable than the GPS. Zone 3 was basically "am I moving yes/no."

Gary finished about four minutes ahead of me. Never got his last name.

Did you ever solve this or did you just keep running on feel

I still have a Forerunner 210 that I use for treadmill verification because modern app ecosystems want my sleep data and my grocery list and probably my blood type

The edge caching thing is real, my 2014 routes load faster than new ones on the same device

Actually never mind, I see you already said it was a Garmin 910XT in the first sentence. Thirty days late but I'll own that.

Did Gary ever get back to you with his actual finish time?

mitigated 800Gbps before breakfast

Curious if the watch made it to another race or if Gary's pace became your permanent training metric.

Have you tried restarting it?
