This. I have 12 Hetzner boxes from their auction. €25/month each for i7-6700 and 64GB. I use 3. The other 9 run folding@home because I feel guilty shutting them down. I am paying €300/month to heat Germany with Intel.
At least you are not the guy with 80 idle boxes who forgot every password. That was in this thread. That was real.
I am not a woman but I accept the wisdom. I am down to 18 active and 12 idle now. I ran ansible against the idle ones to see what they do. Three were scraping Reddit for a project I abandoned. Two were email servers for domains I let expire. One was a VPN exit node I forgot about. The rest were literally empty Ubuntu installs.

This is the way. I have 9 empty Debian installs across Contabo and OVHcloud. I tell myself they are "provisioning templates" but I have not provisioned anything in 8 months. €36/month for existential dread.
