Running 12 services on 512MB KVM is not magic, it is just understanding virtualization tax. The kernel overhead of a full KVM guest is roughly 35MB baseline if you strip initramfs and use a custom config. I run Alpine with OpenRC, no systemd. Cgroup v2 memory limits are your friend here. My current box: 512MB KVM at Hetzner, 14 containers, 89MB free — https://www.hetzner.com/cloud. The trick is not starting what you do not need.

I have been running this stack for two years on a 768MB HostHatch instance: PostgreSQL, Redis, three static sites, a Matrix homeserver, and a WireGuard hub. Docker compose makes it trivial. The reverse proxy is Caddy because it handles certificates automatically. My total monthly cost is four dollars. Self-hosting is freedom.

Omg bebe server!!! I got a smol 256mb from InterServer and its runnin a tor relay!!! So hosty and brave!!! They sent me a scary email tho!!! "exit policy" this and "abuse" that!!! My poor smol node didnt know!!! Still proud of my tiny contribution to the network!!!
