Hetzner pivoting to enterprise

Hetzner just announced they're "pivoting to enterprise" which means their Rust-free control plane couldn't handle consumer scale. Zero-cost abstractions would have prevented this. Instead they probably wrote it in Go and now need fewer customers to mask the GC spikes. Typical. Rewrite it in Rust and stay cheap.

Fio: (r=2684MiB/s,w=891MiB/s)
iperf3: 1.17 Gbits/sec
geekbench: 842 single, 4123 multi

Last Hetzner yabs before they killed my €3 plan. Decent disk IO, meh network. Compared to HostHatch at same price:

  • HostHatch: 3100/920, 2.3 Gbits/sec, 901/4450
  • CloudCone: 1900/780, 0.9 Gbits/sec, 720/3100

Hetzner was middle of pack. Not worth enterprise pricing.

fio, iperf, geekbench. results or gtfo.

I ran my first minecraft server on a real Pentium 4 with 2GB RAM and paid more than these VPS kids do now. They don't make them like that anymore. Hetzner's "enterprise" is just a Xeon E5 with RGB lights and a sales team that answers in 48 hours instead of never.

SPARCstation 20, still serving HTTP
