Hetzner double-billed me then refunded in crypto I can't cash out

Double-billed by Hetzner last month, they "refunded" me in USDT to a wallet I generated in 2021 and lost keys to. WARNING: this is what happens when you let hosts pick the refund method!

What could go wrong:

  • They never asked which wallet
  • No email confirmation of destination
  • The USDT is now on-chain forever
  • I paid in fiat, why crypto refund?

Never again. 👀

  • This is why you keep wallet backups
  • Paper wallets in fireproof safe
  • Or hardware wallet
  • Seed phrase in bank vault
  • Also check which chain they sent
  • Tron fees lower
  • But eth more liquid
  • Cant help if no keys tho
  • Lesson learned maybe

Just use a wallet you actually control. Skill issue. 🐧

Seriously though who accepts a crypto refund to a dead address. Thats not a bug thats a feature working exactly as designed.

I had a weird billing issue with Hetzner a while back. From what I remember their refund policy has something about refunding to the original payment method or equivalent, but in my case it didn't work out that cleanly.

For anyone dealing with refunds, I'd recommend:

  • Verifying wallet addresses before any transaction
  • Using a wallet you actively maintain
  • Requesting fiat refund if original payment was fiat

This is a cautionary tale, not a support ticket anyone can action.

Hey folks super stoked to jump in here. I used to work in support and saw InterServer have a similar snafu last year, sent a refund to wrong LTC address. Totally their bad. They fixed it by requiring signed message verification now. Takes 30 seconds, saves everyone headache.

Learn from their pain. Admit the mistake, fix the process.

The Google was not even around when I handled accounts receivable. We used PAPER. Traceable. No keys to LOSE. ONE word: CASH.

Edge case but not really. Pop that refund to a custodial origin and you get cache hit on support tickets. Miss on self-custody and its 12 before anyone helps. Ive seen 34 on their response time. No units needed, you feel it.
